During winter your skin can become extremely sensitive to the low humidity and dry environment. Even hot showers and heaters can cause more harm to your skin as the artificial heat absorbs moisture from your skin and can cause irritation such as itchiness, rough and dry skin. This is why its crucial to keep your skin hydrated.
People with highly sensitive skin and other skin conditions such as eczema are more likely to be affected in this season.
Here are some hot tips to look after your skin in winter:
1. Say no to long, hot baths
As a rule of thumb try to cut down on long hot baths or add some add essential oils to keep your skin smooth and hydrated as hot water can dehydrate your skin.
Hot showers can remove the natural oils found in your skin and can further diminish the moisture within your skin, which turn makes your skin even drier. Try showering in warm water and don't spend too much time in the bath, maximum 10-15 minutes.
Additionally, using a hydrating moisturising cream will help generate more hydration within your skin. Use mild soaps, preferably those that are non-alkaline and contain high fats and oils.
2. Use a serum regularly
This will hydrate your skin and leave it glowing. Using a serum on a daily basis is one of the most effective ways to maintain a natural glow, especially in winter. Try Our Prickly Pear miracle hydrating serum is the perfect serum to use in winter as it will sooth and hydrate your skin.
Moisturisers restore water and moisture within your skin. You can use your moisturiser with an oil-based cream to gain more benefits.
Moisturisers which are available in an ointment form are considered the most effective and protective ones, as they contain 80% oil and 20% water content.
3. Use of Humidifier
Placing a humidifier in your home will add moisture to the air and keep your skin from going to dry.
If heat or air conditioning is being pumped through your home whilst you sleep, it won't matter how many products you apply, your skin may still experience flakiness, irritation and dehydration.
4. Exfoliation of skin
Don't forget to exfoliate. Skin exfoliation can be extremely beneficial in the winter season as it will remove the dead cells from the skin, which will contribute to regenerating new cells as well.
Dry brushing is also great for exfoliation as it unclogs pores in the exfoliation process. It also helps detoxify your skin by increasing blood circulation and promoting lymph flow-drainage. Always dry brush upwards towards the heart.
5. Stay hydrated
Drinking lots of water is probably the most important step in keeping your skin hydrated.
Additionally eating certain foods will help keep your skin looking rejuvenated and healthy. Reach for food that is rich in omega-3 fatty acids, fresh fruits and vegetables.
Ginger & lemon warm water is rich in multiple vitamins and antioxidants that improve your hair and skin. Both ginger and lemon also have antiseptic and antibacterial properties, effectively treating and preventing skin infections.
6. Do not forget the sunscreen
Don’t forget to use a 50+ sunscreen even during the winter season. The sun is still extremely harsh with high UV index, especially in snowfields.
7. Use a clay mask
Clay has been traditionally used as a wound healer and as a magical ingredient in ancient times for hundreds of years. It was further transformed into clay masks to improve the skin’s overall texture.
